Honor Mom!! May 10 2026

There is a timeless commandment to honor our parents, with a special focus on Mother's Day. Drawing from Exodus 20:12, we explore how this is the first commandment with a promise—that honoring our father and mother leads to blessing and long life. What makes this teaching so profound is how it meets us at every stage of life with different expressions of honor. As children, we honor through obedience—doing what we're told, when we're told, happily. The concept of 'over-obedience' challenges young ones to astound their parents by going beyond what's asked. As adolescents and students, honor evolves into respect—accepting our mothers despite their imperfections, listening to their wisdom, and practicing forgiveness. Then as adults, we treasure our mothers by staying connected, sharing our lives, and caring for them as they age. The message confronts our natural selfishness head-on, acknowledging that we cannot live up to this high standard in our own strength. This is where the gospel becomes essential—we need Christ's transforming power and the Holy Spirit's daily empowerment to become people who truly honor others. The practical applications are clear: make that weekly phone call, share life's details, listen even when we disagree, and care for aging parents as an expression of genuine faith.
